Slavery and urgent need for reparations
During the celebration of the International Day of People of African Descent, the United Nations Committee against Racial Discrimination (CERD) called on states to implement comprehensive restorative justice, which combines compensation, restitution, rehabilitation and structural reforms to countries affected by slave trade. The committee also acknowledged that slavery is not just a thing of the past. Its effects continue to be felt in systemic inequality and racism.
