There is a saying that a teacher’s reward is in heaven but for the esteemed provost of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Odugbo, Benue State, Professor Joel Eriba, his case is different.
Eriba, founding provost of FCE Odugbo, who shines brightly in the field of science education, was recently rewarded with a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN).
The prestigious honour presented by STAN president, Prof Donatus Igbokwe, celebrates Eriba’s exceptional contributions to mentoring and nurturing science teachers across Nigeria.
For over four decades, Eriba has dedicated his life to the advancement of science education.
His unwavering passion for chemistry education has seen him impact countless lives both within and beyond the classroom and his recent award as a fellow of STAN is not just a personal achievement but a testament to his lifelong commitment to expanding the horizons of science education in Nigeria.
At the occasion, Eriba was joined by his colleagues and mentees who spoke glowingly, with respect and admiration of the man they described as a science maverick.
At the event, Prof. Elizabeth Gyuse, who has worked alongside Eriba for over 20 years, said they have spearheaded numerous projects, including a TETFund-sponsored research initiative on mentoring science teachers in Benue State in 2014.
Gyuse recalled the success of the 2010 STAN annual conference, organized in Benue under Eriba’s guidance, and his extensive contributions to science education journals.
She said: “One of Prof Eriba’s most significant contributions was his inaugural lecture in 2024, a landmark event that captivated a large academic audience.
“In his lecture, he emphasized the crucial role of attitude in science education, urging educators to inspire a love of learning and curiosity in their students.
“This message resonated deeply, reinforcing Eriba’s belief that the future of science in Nigeria lies in the hands of passionate, well-mentored educators.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Eriba has held numerous academic leadership positions at Benue State University, Makurdi, including Head of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, Deputy Dean of the Postgraduate School, Director of Academic Planning, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
His leadership and vision have not only shaped the university but have also left an indelible mark on the broader field of science education in Nigeria.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Timothy Akpoghol, state chairman of STAN Benue State Chapter, lauded Eriba’s innovative teaching methods and his ability to foster a love of scientific inquiry among students.
Akpoghol noted that Eriba’s dedication to excellence in science education makes him a deserving recipient of the fellow of STAN award.
One of Eriba’s mentees, Dr. Ruth Samuel, congratulated him, saying his relentless dedication to nurturing the next generation of science educators is equal to none.
She described him as a guiding light in her own career, saying his influence has shaped her approach to teaching and research.
In his acceptance speech, Eriba expressed profound gratitude to STAN for recognizing his contributions and for the honour.
He said the award will spur him further to mentoring future science educators and working collaboratively with colleagues to advance the field of science education, not only in Nigeria but globally.
He said he believes that passion, dedication and an unyielding belief in the power of education will transform lives.
Eriba’s story serves as an inspiration to all educators, reminding them that through mentorship and commitment, teachers can shape the future of science education for generations to come while also receiving reward here on earth.
