South Africa kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive after battling to a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in a tense Group A encounter at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday.

Both sides entered the match seeking their first points of the tournament after losing their opening fixtures, making the contest crucial to their qualification ambitions.

The Czech Republic made a dream start, taking the lead just six minutes into the game. Michal Sadílek finished from close range after being picked out by Adam Sojka, giving the Europeans an early advantage and forcing South Africa onto the back foot.

Despite enjoying significant possession for long periods, Bafana Bafana struggled to break down a disciplined Czech defence. The South Africans controlled large spells of the match but created few clear-cut opportunities as the Czech Republic remained compact and organised.

South Africa eventually found a way back into the contest in the 83rd minute when referee Tori Penso awarded a penalty after Pavel Šulc was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.

The decision sparked debate, with several pundits questioning whether the midfielder’s arm position warranted a spot-kick.

Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way to restore parity and ignite celebrations among South African supporters inside the stadium.

The late equaliser set up a frantic finish, with both teams searching for a winner.

South Africa came closest in stoppage time through Evidence Makgopa and Aubrey Modiba, but the Czech defence held firm to secure a share of the spoils.

The result leaves both nations with one point from two matches and facing a must-win situation in their final group games if they are to secure a place in the Round of 32.

For South Africa, the draw offers renewed hope after a difficult start to the tournament, while the Czech Republic will be disappointed not to have converted an early lead into a vital victory.

Mexico and South Korea, the other teams in Group A, are scheduled to meet later on Thursday, with the outcome expected to have a major impact on the qualification race.
