Ivorian striker, Elye Wahi has been denied visa to enter Canada ahead of his country’s second group game against Germany in Toronto.
The Ivorian Football Federation announced the development, saying the player would not travel with the delegation to Canada for Saturday’s game, but gave no reason.
Wahi was a starter as Cote d’Ivoire defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their first Group E match on Monday.
The 23-year-old player, who is on-loan at Lique 1 side Nice, is under probe in France for spot-fixing having been accused of deliberately getting a yellow card in a league game in March.
Spot-fixing is an illegal activity tied to betting in which a player agrees, usually in exchange for a bribe, to ensure a specific incident happens during the game. It is a form of match- fixing.
Wahi was reported to French authorities after betting operators noticed an unusually high number of bettors placed bets on him being given a yellow card in the game against Metz.
He is the second African player denied entry into Canada during the ongoing World Cup, following Ghana’s Thomas Partey, who is facing a sexual assault case in the United Kingdom.
