Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the United Kingdom will not join the US-Israeli offensive against Iran.

Starmer had announced late Sunday that Britain agreed to a US request to use its bases for a “specific and limited defensive purpose.” However, he stressed that the UK was not part of the initial wave of strikes on Iran.

“I want to be very clear: we all remember the mistakes of Iraq. And we have learned those lessons,” Starmer said in a video address.

“We were not involved in the initial strikes on Iran, and we will not join offensive action now.”

Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer reinforced that position, saying, “Let me be really clear: the UK is not at war.”

He added that Britain made a “deliberate decision” to avoid joining the first round of attacks but agreed to support defensive operations in response to what he called “reckless attacks from Iran.”

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed the drone strike was “specifically on the airport runway” and said the government was “working on every possible option” to assist British nationals in the region.

She noted that an estimated 300,000 UK citizens live in Gulf countries affected by the escalating tensions.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said a “Shahed unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into the military facilities of the British Bases in Akrotiri, causing minor material damage.”

The strike occurred shortly after midnight, according to Cypriot authorities.

Despite the attack, British officials maintained that their involvement remains defensive.

The government has urged nationals in affected countries to register with authorities and follow local security guidance as the regional crisis deepens.
