Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he expects to become a major target of political opponents if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while explaining why he remained determined to support Tinubu’s re-election despite the political risks associated with his position.
The FCT minister specifically mentioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as politicians he believes would target him if Tinubu is defeated.
“But you see, in politics, I’m not a threat. My concern is, I will support Mr President,” Wike said.
He added that the consequences of a Tinubu defeat would make his continued support for the President particularly important to him.
“If you watch what’s happening today and look at it, peradventure anything happens and Mr President fails today, I will be the first politician that Atiku, Obi will hunt for his head,” he said.
Wike said he would not sit back and watch the President lose the election, insisting that his political activities were now focused on securing Tinubu’s victory.
“I will be the first politician. I challenge anybody. So, I won’t make that mistake, to be sleeping to see the President lose his election. No,” he said.

The minister described his support for Tinubu as a deliberate political decision and said he was aware of the possible consequences should the opposition prevail in 2027.
According to Wike, his commitment to the President’s re-election extends beyond public appearances, saying it occupies much of his attention.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the President’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the President’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the President’s re-election,” he said.
Wike also dismissed criticism over his decision to back Tinubu despite remaining a member of the PDP.
He said the backlash against him had been intense but maintained that he was not concerned about what his critics called him.
“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their own thing. My business is, like I said, I am going to support Mr President,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor’s position has continued to generate controversy within the opposition camp, particularly as political parties and groups realign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Wike, however, has maintained that his decision to support Tinubu is firm and that he will continue to work towards the President’s re-election.
