A vice president of Bank of America, Erin Piacenti, has died after she was stabbed in an afternoon attack in New York City’s Times Square.
Piacenti sustained serious injuries during the attack on Monday and later died, according to Reuters.
The New York Police Department said a woman and a 68-year-old man were stabbed on West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue at about 4:30pm local time.
Police said officers fatally shot the female suspect after she allegedly continued advancing towards them while armed with knives.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the attack appeared to have been random and unprovoked.
According to Tisch, officers initially attempted to stop the woman with a Taser, but opened fire after the device failed to halt her advance.
The 68-year-old man was taken to hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Bank of America confirmed Piacenti’s death in a statement, describing her as a valued member of its workforce.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague,” the bank said.
“She was a valued teammate who will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones.”
The stabbing occurred in Times Square, one of New York’s busiest public spaces, which attracts an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 pedestrians daily.
The incident comes amid renewed concern over violent attacks involving prominent corporate figures in New York, following the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
