Arewa group launches free health screening in Lagos

The Northern People Political Group (NPPG), South West Zone, last Saturday launched a free medical check-up and awareness initiative in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos. The exercise drew residents from the local community, offering vital health screenings and educational guidance.

Spearheaded by NPPG national leader, Hajiya Ramatu Lawal, the initiative attracted more than 200 market women, traders, youths, landlords and community residents who arrived early to benefit from the on-the-spot medical services. The programme, designed to raise awareness of common health risks, focused on screening for high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels- condition that, if left unchecked, can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes–related illnesses.

The medical team led by Matron Ibilola Dosunmu, set up the screening stations promptly at 11a.m., ensuring that participants were attended to efficiently. Alhaji Dahiru Musa, event chairman, translated key health messages into Hausa language to ensure that everyone understood the importance of the exercise. He told participants, that routine health screenings were critical in detecting potential risks early and reducing the likelihood of serious health complications.

Dosunmu explained the significance of the test: “Blood pressure measures the force that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries as the hearth pumps, while blood sugar –or glucose – is the main energy source derived from the food we consume. Regular monitoring of these parameters is essential to maintaining good health and preventing long–term complications. The initiative aimes to increase life expectancy and promote wellness in Lagos communities through awareness and early detection.”

Lawal’s commitment to public health and humanitarian service was praised by community leaders in attendance. Musa lauded her selflessness and dedication, noting that her philanthropic efforts have consistently focused on improving the lives of residents across Lagos.

Other attendees, including Risi Lawal, Hajiya Maryam Adamu, Hajiya Maryam Abubakar, Ahmed Tijani Sulaiman and Alhaji Waziri Usman, described Lawal as a bridge builder whose compassion and purposeful initiatives continue to benefit communities.

NPPG initiative demonstrated the impact of proactive health initiatives, combining medical services with education to empower residents take charge of their health. By bringing healthcare closer to the people, the programme not only improved immediate well-being but also fostered a culture of preventive healthcare that could save lives over time.
