FGGC Owerri: Concerned parents raise alarm over alleged disruptive policy of new principal

Call on supervising authorities to intervene

Concerned parents of Federal Government Girls’ College Owerri (FGGCO) have called on the Federal Ministry of Education and the supervising authorities of Unity Schools to urgently intervene and investigate the alleged disruptive policies of the new Principal/Director, Mrs Ozoemena Gladys Onyeguiri, of Federal Government Girls’ College Owerri in Imo State since her assumption of office.

The parents alleged staff victimisation, punitive transfers and financial charges imposed on students, warning that, if left unchecked, these issues may adversely affect the reputation, discipline, welfare and smooth administration of the institution.

In a petition to the Federal Government and supervising authorities of Federal Government Colleges, signed by Mrs Clara Ijeoma Ihejirika, a concerned parent, and made available to the Daily Sun, the parents called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene over the alleged “disruptive policy” of the principal of FGGCO, which they claimed is causing concern among staff members, parents and students.

According to Mrs Ihejirika:

“I write as a parent of Federal Government Girls’ College, Owerri, to draw the attention of the public and, more importantly, the appropriate authorities to developments in the school which, if left unchecked, may adversely affect the reputation, discipline, welfare and smooth administration of the institution.

“Within approximately four months of the new Principal’s assumption of office, the following members of staff were reportedly transferred:

“Mrs Ogueri: VP, Student Affairs I.

“Mrs Ejelonu: VP, Student Affairs II.

“Chief Stella Orji: VP, Academics I.

“Mrs Okoro Ebere: Head of Subject, Social Studies.

“These transfers were reportedly effected on 2 August 2026.

“In addition, Dr Mrs Okanne, Assistant Director, was reportedly transferred on 20 August 2026.

“The concern requiring investigation is whether the transfers were made in accordance with Federal Ministry of Education procedures, or whether any of them amounted to punitive or retaliatory transfers.

“Termination of the services of a part-time Mathematics teacher, charges of two thousand naira imposed on outgoing SS3 students, and a fine of N10,000 imposed on students for organising a bonfire night after their final examinations, allegedly for damage to school property, for which the Principal could not provide evidence when parents requested to see the damage.

“We request the Federal Government and the supervising authorities of Federal Government Colleges to investigate all fees, surcharges and other financial collections imposed on students, including the SS3 clearance charges.

“We request proper records, approvals, receipts and accountability for all such collections. Examine the disciplinary procedures used against students involved in the reported incidents. Ensure that students are not subjected to arbitrary or disproportionate financial penalties. Investigate allegations of improper influence or claims of using officials within the Ministry to effect personnel decisions.

“Provide an avenue through which staff, students and parents can confidentially report concerns without fear of victimisation.”
