Wildlife trafficking: FOU Zone B Customs intercepts live pangolins

From Sola Ojo, Abuja

Operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’, have intercepted two live pangolins being illegally transported along the Kano-Jigawa axis.

The seizure, which took place on March 12, 2026, followed a stop-and-search operation conducted by customs officers as part of an ongoing enforcement drive against smuggling.

According to NCS authorities in Kaduna, the vehicle conveying the animals was flagged down at about 10:00 a.m., leading to the discovery of the endangered species.

According to the NCS, the operation aligns with the provisions of CITES, which prohibits the illegal trade of wildlife species threatened with extinction.

The intercepted pangolins, each weighing approximately 15 kilogrammes, were secured in protective cages and transported to the FOU Zone ‘B’ headquarters in Kaduna for further handling.

Comptroller Aminu Sule, who heads the unit, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to trace the origin and intended destination of the animals.

He warned that the zone would not serve as a corridor for wildlife traffickers, stressing the Service’s resolve to curb illegal activities.

Pangolins are widely regarded as the most trafficked mammals globally, making the latest interception a significant step in efforts to combat wildlife crime and preserve biodiversity.

The Customs Service reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and international agreements aimed at safeguarding endangered species across the country.
