Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has paid tribute to late former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing him as a leader who lived a “distinguished life of service” to Nigeria.
Saraki made the remarks in a condolence message shared on his Facebook page following the news of Tukur’s death on Saturday.
He said, “Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, former National Chairman of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, lived a distinguished life of service.
“From his time as Governor of the old Gongola State to the many responsibilities he took on at the national level, he gave a great deal of himself to Nigeria.”
Saraki recalled his long association with the late elder statesman, particularly during their years together in the PDP.
“Over the years, our paths crossed many times, particularly during our years in the PDP. We did not always see things the same way, as is often the case in politics, but I never lost my respect for his experience, the strength of his convictions and his dedication to our nation,” he stated.
The former Kwara governor extended condolences to the family, the people of Adamawa State and the PDP family.
“As we mourn his passing, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, the people of Adamawa State and our entire PDP family,” he said.
According to a statement released by Chief Victor Okpala on behalf of the family, Tukur died at 12 noon on Saturday at his Abuja residence aged 90.
He served Nigeria as Governor of old Gongola State, Managing Director and Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Federal Minister, Chairman of the African Business Roundtable, and National Chairman of the PDP.
