US: Scores feared dead in passenger jet, helicopter collision

Plane crash

Scores of passengers are feared dead after an American Airlines regional passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter collided on Wednesday night.

According to officials, both aircraft crashed into the  Potomac River near Reagan Washington National Airport.

While a death toll has not been revealed, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, who hails from Kansas where the flight originated, hinted that all on board died.

“It’s really hard when you lose probably over 60 Kansans simultaneously,” he stated at a news conference at Reagan Airport early on Thursday, per a Reuters report.

“When one person dies, it’s a tragedy, but when many, many, many people die, it’s an unbearable sorrow. It’s a heartbreak beyond measure,” Marshall added.

CBS News disclosed that 18 bodies have been recovered so far, as revealed by a police official.

Two sources also revealed that multiple bodies had been pulled from the river in ongoing rescue efforts.
