The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Lagos State Council, has extended warm Christmas greetings to workers across Lagos State and Nigeria, even as it renewed its call for solidarity within the labour movement, insisting that unity must be anchored on internal democracy and unwavering respect for the collective will of workers across the country.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the TUC Lagos State Council, Abiodun Aladetan, the council reminded the Christian faithful that Christmas is a season of reflection and renewal which provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, sacrifices, and enduring contributions of Nigerian workers to nation-building.

“Christmas calls us to introspection as a labour movement. The recent internal elections revealed differences of opinion and approaches among comrades. While such differences are a natural feature of democratic engagement, they also highlight the urgent need for union leaders at all levels to consistently respect the wishes, choices, and voices of the workers they represent.”

Aladetan affirmed that the TUC firmly believes that the legitimacy and strength of organised labour rest on strong internal democracy, transparency, and accountability; therefore, union leadership must always flow from the freely expressed will of members, and internal processes must inspire confidence, fairness, and inclusiveness.

“Where the voice of workers is respected, unity is strengthened; where it is ignored, division festers. At this critical moment, the TUC calls on all labour leaders and stakeholders to rise above personal interests, recommit to democratic principles, and strengthen internal governance arrangements within our unions.”

He added that the future of the labour movement depends on workers’ collective ability to build structures that are just, participatory, and responsive to the aspirations of workers.

“As we celebrate Christmas, let us close ranks, heal divisions, and work together to reposition the Trade Union Congress as a united, credible, and people-driven platform for defending workers’ rights, promoting social justice, and advancing national development. May the spirit of Christmas renew our commitment to unity, democracy, and collective progress within the labour movement and the nation at large,” he prayed.
