9ice, Odumodu Blvck thrill Abuja crowd at walk against cancer Nigerian music stars 9ice and Odumodu Blvck brought music and entertainment to the streets of Abuja as they joined other stakeholders at a cancer awareness walk aimed at intensifying the fight against the disease.
The artistes serenaded participants and audience members during the carnival-like walk through Abuja’s Central Business District, using their performances to add colour to an initiative focused on raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.
The event brought together health advocates, policymakers, and other key stakeholders to highlight the need for greater public awareness and stronger interventions to reduce Nigeria’s cancer burden.
According to oncologists, approximately 152,261 new cancer cases are recorded annually in Nigeria, with breast, prostate, cervical, uterine, colorectal and liver cancers among the most common.
The awareness walk supports Nigeria’s target of reducing the cancer burden by 30 to 50 per cent by 2030 under the Nigeria National Cancer Control Plan.
President of the Union for International Cancer Control, Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, alongside other stakeholders, is championing efforts to strengthen cancer prevention, early detection and access to treatment in the country.
Speaking during the campaign, the Minister for Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, said: “In the last year, not less than one trillion naira has gone into cancer control from the federal government.”
The President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, emphasised the importance of regular screening and early medical intervention, urging Nigerians to take proactive steps towards protecting their health.
“Check your breast every month. Let your daughters be vaccinated. When you feel something, go to the hospital,” she said.
She also disclosed that a five-year Memorandum of Understanding had been signed with a non-governmental organisation in Belgium to support early cancer detection.
As 9ice and Odumodu Blvck entertained the crowd, stakeholders stressed that sustained funding, regular screening, health insurance and proper nutrition remained essential to achieving the country’s cancer-reduction target.
