Civil Engineering student emerges overall best with 4.89 CGPA

No fewer than 147 students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, will be graduating with First Class in various courses at the 35th convocation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The Vice Chancellor of OOU, Prof Ayodeji Johnson Agboola, disclosed this at a pre-convocation briefing held on Thursday at the university Senate Chambers.
Prof Agboola announced that the overall best graduating student, with a 4.89 CGPA, is Ajayi David Bamidele from the Department of Civil Engineering.
The OOU helmsman listed the convocation events to include a health walk for staff, as well as Jumat service and students’ activities on Friday, January 23; a convocation service on Sunday; cultural day; agric and engineering show; and award of first degrees on Thursday, January 29 and Friday, January 30.
He disclosed that on Saturday, January 31, the convocation lecture titled “Reposition Nigerian Universities as Innovation Hubs for Entrepreneurship and National Development” will be delivered by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, while the conferment of honorary degrees and award of higher degrees and diplomas will hold the same day.
Agboola announced that 5,808 graduates will convoke for the 2024/2025 academic session, including full-time students as well as those from the Centre for Continuing Education (CCED) and Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
He added: “The breakdown shows that there are 147 graduands that earned First Class, a total of 2,051 in Second Class Upper Division, 2,977 graduates in Second Class Lower Division, while 571 others obtained Third Class degrees. A total of 26 graduands had Pass degrees, with 86 others uncategorised.”

According to him, the high point of the convocation will be on Saturday, January 31, when the founder of Optimus Bank and Mango Asset Management, Mr Ayo Ojuroye, will be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Science for his contributions to the nation and Ogun State.
The VC explained that the convocation would not have been possible without the cooperation of the students, the unrelenting efforts of staff, the commitment of OOU management and the support of the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
He said OOU’s academic programmes continue to rank among the best globally, with its courses enjoying 100 per cent accreditation status. He also stated that the National Universities Commission (NUC) team recently visited for the accreditation of 46 programmes.
“In a bid to contribute meaningfully to the global knowledge economy, our institution recently introduced new programmes in emerging fields. These include Logistics and Supply, Marketing, Advertising, Food Technology, Film and Multimedia Studies, Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations,” Agboola stated.
Prof Agboola said with the provision of state-of-the-art facilities across its various campuses, OOU has continued to redefine the learning experience.
On admissions, the VC said the university attracted over 16,000 applications for 8,000 vacancies, rose to 21,000 applicants in 2024 and the number jumped to 41,000 for 9,000 vacancies.
The OOU helmsman used the occasion to appreciate stakeholders, alumni and industry partners for their contributions to the university’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
