Ohanaeze seeks clarification on Ngige’s detention

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has expressed concern over reports surrounding the detention of Dr Chris Ngige, the former Minister of Labour and Employment, calling on the authorities to clarify the circumstances and uphold due process.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, the Igbo socio-cultural organisation said Nigerians deserved to be properly informed about the reasons for Dr Ngige’s continued detention “in the interest of transparency, justice and the rule of law.”

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo considers it imperative to be adequately informed of the circumstances surrounding Dr. Ngige’s continued detention. Ndigbo and indeed Nigerians deserve clarity as to the reasons necessitating this action,” the Igbo group said.

While stressing that it does not condone corruption, Ohanaeze said it was equally opposed to persecution, selective justice, or any action that could suggest a disregard for due process.

“We do not support corruption in any form and have consistently aligned ourselves with accountability and good governance,” the statement read. “However, we are opposed to persecution, selective justice, or actions that may give the impression of injustice or disregard for due process.”

Based on this position, the organisation demanded that Dr Ngige be granted bail in line with established legal procedures, assuring that it was ready to stand as surety if required.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is willing and ready to provide the necessary assurances, including producing him whenever required by the appropriate authorities,” Dr Chukwu stated.

The group further urged relevant agencies to act with fairness and professionalism, warning that failure to respect constitutional safeguards could erode public confidence in the justice system.

Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to justice, equity and the rule of law, describing them as essential to national unity and democratic stability, and reiterated its desire for “an egalitarian society for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
