A girlfriend of Nemesio Oseguera, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was instrumental in locating him in Tapalpa, a scenic village of vacation homes in western Mexico.
The 59-year-old, nicknamed “El Mencho,” was wounded in a clash with Mexican soldiers on Sunday and died while being airlifted to hospital. Mexican military intelligence, with support from the US Northern Command, had learned that the woman planned to meet Oseguera, allowing authorities to plan the operation.
Mexican Defence Secretary Ricardo Trevilla said, “One of the romantic partners of ‘El Mencho’ was brought to a house in Tapalpa by a trusted associate. She met with Oseguera and then left, leaving him with his security detail.” The National Guard’s Special Immediate Reaction Force executed the raid using coordinated land and air manoeuvres.

“Honestly, it was a pretty violent attack,” Trevilla added. Oseguera was found with assault weapons and two rocket launchers. He and his guards took cover in nearby forested terrain, but soldiers eventually surrounded them.
All three Oseguera and two escorts were airlifted to a hospital in Guadalajara, where they perished en route. Their bodies were transported to Mexico City and handed over to the General Prosecutor’s Office. Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed that Oseguera’s remains will be returned to his family.
The operation also resulted in the death of his right-hand man, Hugo H., known as “El Tuli,” in El Grullo, Jalisco. Trevilla said, “He was offering 20,000 pesos ($1,150) for every soldier who was killed.” “El Tuli” died carrying an assault weapon, a pistol, and nearly $1.4 million.
Oseguera’s death triggered violent unrest across 20 states, with hundreds of roadblocks and torchings. Authorities deployed around 10,000 soldiers, and calm has returned to most areas, though isolated disruptions continue in parts of Jalisco and neighbouring Michoacan state.
