The Mailafia Peace and Unity Football Tournament’s 7th edition culminated in an intense clash between Thunder FC of Agyaragu town and Keana Selected FC.

The final, held at Daddare in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State North-Central Nigeria on Tuesday, Boxing day witnessed Thunder FC triumph with a narrow 1-0 win over their opponents.

Abdullahi Suleiman of Thunder FC secured the sole goal of the match in the 7th minute, securing their victory. Despite Keana Selected FC’s relentless efforts during both halves, they couldn’t alter the scoreline, ending the game 1-0 in favor of Thunder FC.

The tournament garnered significant support from football enthusiasts who rallied behind their respective teams, showcasing the best of grassroots football in Nasarawa State.

Thunder FC claimed the tournament title and a cash prize of N700,000, while runners-up Keana Selected FC received N500,000. Giant Killers FC of Agyaragu FULafia secured third place with a prize of N400,000, and the fourth-placed team took home N150,000.

Yakubu Mailafia, the tournament organizer, emphasized its primary goal of providing a platform for young talents to shine and promoting local football. Expressing satisfaction with this edition’s performance, he pledged to address any shortcomings for an even better event next year, aiming to enhance the tournament’s quality.

The Football Association’s Nasarawa State Chairman, Salisu Galadima, praised the tournament’s contribution to fostering peace and unity among the state’s youth. He affirmed continued support to sustain and grow the tournament.

Sun reports that notable figures in the sports community, including Muhammed Dan’azimi, Chairman of Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), and Dr. Ladan Bosso, President of the Nigeria Coaches Association, lauded the tournament’s role in nurturing grassroots talent. They highlighted the potential of these players to excel not only at national but also international levels.

Aside from the championship, awards were presented to outstanding players and officiating team members, including Bilyamu Musa, the tournament’s top scorer, who received a golden boot and jersey from Dr. Bosso.
