The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Prof. Usman Ogbo, has said he was satisfied leaving the institution better than he met it having embarked on comprehensive developments of the institution to make it one of the best polytechnics in the country.

Prof. Ogbo gave the disclosure yesterday during the pre-convocation press briefing of the 5th Combined  Convocation ceremony for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions.

Prof. Ogbo who was last week appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba, has just completed his first term as Rector, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, and was in the first year of his second term in office.

He said when he came in 2021, the polytechnic was bedeviled with exam malpractices and  cultist activities and that the academic activities of the school were comatose such that the institution was regarded as a glorified secondary school.

While reeling out his achievements in office, he said the institution has successfully completed accreditation and re-accreditation of all its 47 programmes by the National Board for Technical Education.

Prof. Ogbo said he carried out the establishment and accreditation of the School of Agricultural Technology at Itakpe with four programmes namely, Agricultural Technology, Animal Health and Production Technology, Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Technology, and Horticulture and Landscape Technology.

He said he also constituted the Academic Board Central Results Verification Committee, leading to proper scrutiny of results, cost-effectiveness, and reduction in time wastage at the Academic Board meetings, which he said hitherto caused delay in the release of results.

The Rector also said he introduced Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the conduct of the General Studies and other examinations with large classes in the institution, which he said has curbed unethical practices and ensured prompt release of results.

“When I came on board, we introduced a new statement of result template with additional security features to curb falsification and also introduced e-Results computation and display of semester results online for students to make it easy for them to access their results.

“This and many other innovations have helped in the prompt release of results and mobilisation of our students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme,” he added.

On the 5th Convocation, he said a total of 2,965 students at both the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels in the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions will be graduating.

The breakdown of the graduating students shows a total of 1,711 students with National Diploma (ND) in various programmes.

Similarly, a total of 1,254 students are to also graduate with Higher National Diploma (HND) in various programmes.

A total of 41 students are to graduate with Distinctions from various Schools and Departments at the National Diploma (ND) level.

Similarly, another 38 students are to graduate with Distinctions from various Schools and Departments at the Higher National Diploma (HND) level.

He said a Convocation Lecture is scheduled to hold today, Friday, while the Convocation proper will hold on Saturday where eminent Nigerians will be given various academic awards.
