A plan by suspected Lakurawa terrorists to attack the Maje border community through the grazing of cattle at night was disrupted by operatives of the Kebbi State Police Command.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.

According to him, “On 20th February, 2026, at about 21:45 hours, security operatives along the Maje border road were attacked by armed bandits suspected to be members of the Lakurawa criminal network. The attackers moved a herd of cattle at night, using it to conceal their approach.

“Alert and well-prepared Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) operatives engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat. Some temporary security structures were damaged, but no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. Security along the border has been reinforced, and the area is calm and fully under control.”

Usman said the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Umar Mohammed Hadeija, has urged residents, especially herders and livestock owners, to avoid night movement of cattle in ways that could be exploited by criminals.

“Security agencies will take firm and lawful action against any unlawful activity or suspicious movement associated with night grazing.

“The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police or security formation. The Kebbi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property across Kebbi State,” he added.
