The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has dismissed reports that it sought a fresh court order to extend the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
In a statement by its spokesperson, John Odey, the commission said its court appearance on March 17, 2026, was strictly for the hearing of an application filed by El-Rufai challenging his remand.
“ICPC wishes to clarify the current legal status of the remand in detention of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.
“This statement is necessary to correct inaccurate reports… suggesting that the commission was… seeking a fresh extension of his detention.”

The agency explained that during proceedings, El-Rufai’s counsel was served its response, after which the defence requested time to study the documents.
“The lawyer subsequently requested an adjournment to respond… Consequently, the magistrate adjourned the hearing… to 31st March 2026,” it added.
The ICPC maintained that the former governor remains in lawful custody under an existing court order, stressing that due process is being followed.
“We believe that legal disputes should be settled in the courtroom, not on newspaper pages and social media platforms,” the commission said, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
