The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) conferred fellowship status on 672 members at its 23rd Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held in Lagos at the weekend.
ICAN President, Innocent Okwuosa, stated that the awardees had been rigorously examined and found worthy of the prestigious FCA designation, the highest status within the institute. He urged the newly conferred fellows to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in their organizations and contribute to the nation’s economic development.
Okwuosa highlighted the challenges and opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability in the accounting profession, emphasizing the need for upskilling to remain relevant. He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s achievements during his first year in office while urging the government to consider ICAN’s position papers on economic policies.
“We have issued about 10 position papers cutting across all government policies and presented them to the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and the Ministry of Finance,” stated Okwuosa. “They should look into them and follow the recommendations of the institute. Our desire is to assist the government to get it right so that everyone can enjoy the dividends of democracy.”
Emmanuel Nnorom, Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, encouraged the awardees to use their skills to create solutions to real-life challenges. He emphasized the importance of education, urging the fellows to “develop a strong thirst for knowledge by advancing their education where possible while adopting new accounting standards.”
