Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has announced the approval of an end-of-year bonus for state civil servants, describing the gesture as part of efforts to recognise their sacrifices and boost morale.

The governor, however, did not disclose the amount of the bonus.

Sule made the announcement on Tuesday in Lafia at the 2025 Nasarawa State Civil Service Week, where he also formally launched the new Public Service Rules to guide workers in the discharge of their duties.

He explained that although the state government initially considered paying a 13th-month salary, challenges being faced by some local government areas (LGAs) made the decision impracticable.

“We would have announced a 13th-month bonus for workers, but some local government areas are not doing so well to pay the same amount,” Sule said.

“So, we will ask the LGAs to go and do their due process, find out how much they have saved and tell me what percentage they can pay. The moment they tell me the percentage they can pay, that is exactly what the state can pay.

“I don’t want to go ahead and say I’m paying 13 months and the LGAs will say they can only pay 30 to 40 per cent,” he added.

The governor said the Civil Service Week provided an opportunity to appraise the state civil service, not merely as a workforce, but as a living institution that must be driven by excellence, integrity and innovation.

He noted that the theme of the celebration, “Repositioning the Civil Service for a Digital and Production Future,” was timely, given the administration’s commitment to digital governance.

“In this age of global digital transformation, no government can afford to operate without data tools, methods and the right mindset,” Sule said.

“The civil service must evolve into a smart, technology-driven and data-informed organisation capable of responding swiftly and effectively to the needs of the good people of Nasarawa State.”

According to him, the state government is laying the foundation for a paperless, efficient and transparent public administration through the digitalisation of human resource systems, payroll management and record-keeping.

“This is to build a public service that is not only productive, but also future-ready,” he said.

Sule also disclosed that his administration had approved and implemented the backlog of promotions for civil servants, describing the move as a step towards restoring hope and fairness in the system.

He further commended the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, saying the ongoing economic reforms had enabled the state to execute projects without resorting to borrowing.

At the event, the governor rewarded some outstanding and punctual civil servants, with Comfort David receiving N1 million, while Amina Idris and Chinasa Azubini received N500,000 each.

Earlier, the Head of Service of Nasarawa State, Mrs. Abigail Waya, commended the governor for his consistent support to the civil service.

She said the 2025 Civil Service Week featured a series of activities and pledged that the celebration would be institutionalised in the state.

Waya urged civil servants to remain dedicated and punctual, and advised them to obtain and study the new Public Service Rules to guide them in the course of discharging their duties.
