The Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to preventing flooding, announcing that buildings obstructing drainage channels will be demolished as part of efforts to protect lives and property during the peak of the rainy season.
The Commissioner for Environment, Oladimeji Oresanya, disclosed this while speaking on Channels TV Morning Brief, assuring residents that the state had made adequate preparations for the expected heavy rainfall between late September and October.
According to him, the government has already carried out extensive dredging of the Oparun River, which connects to the Ogun River at Isheri, to improve the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding.
“We have made preparations, dredging the Oparun River adjoining the Ogun River at Isheri to allow reticulation. We are more than prepared for the challenge coming around the end of September to the month of October,” Oresanya said.
The commissioner warned that the government would not hesitate to remove structures built on drainage channels, stressing that such developments obstruct the natural flow of water and worsen flooding during heavy rains.
He also announced that authorities would intensify enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal, noting that dumping refuse in drains remains one of the major causes of blocked waterways and urban flooding.
