Five dead, 18 injured in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway crash

Five persons lost their lives and 18 others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash at the Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Thursday.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the incident occurred near the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant around 3:18pm on the fateful day.

FRSC Route Commander, Theophilus Okoduwa, stated that 25 people, comprising 13 males and 12 females, were involved in the crash. He added that four males and one female died, while seven males and 11 females sustained varying degrees of injury.

The crash involved a Dongfeng truck, a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus, and a Honda car.

Okoduwa noted that FRSC personnel arrived at the scene within nine minutes of receiving the distress call at 3:25 p.m.

The injured were taken to Tex Hospital at 9th Mile Corner for urgent treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Ekochin Hospital Mortuary after being confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Preliminary investigations by necessary authorities revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speed and dangerous overtaking.
