Bauchi: Commission Spends N47 million for Promotion of 2000 Local Govt Staff

The Bauchi State Government has spent the sum of N47 million for the conduct of the 2023 promotional examinations for 2000 staff of 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

This was disclosed by the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, during a ministerial press briefing in Bauchi.

The current figure of civil servants working in all the 20 Local Government Area of Bauchi State is 17, 866, according to Wabi

Wabi disclosed that promotion waiver was granted by Governor Bala Mohammed for the conduct of promotional examinations for five years for all the civil servants of the local governments from 2018 to 2022.

Giving a breakdown, he said that the Local Government Service Commission has spent the sum of N29.2 on staff Promotion Examination for the year 2017.

He said the sum of N29.3 million was spent on retreat for Executive Chairmen, Deputy Chairmen and councilors in 2021.

He revealed that N18 million was expended to conduct workshops for heads of administration , directors of revenue, works, administration and Finance in 2023 while N23.3 million was the cost of training workshops for heads of administration, Directors of Agriculture, Revenue and Social Development.

He said that the Bauchi State Local Government Service Commission was established by Edict No.3 of 1976 Now Cap 193, Laws of Bauchi State, 2007.

“The Commission is a Statutory Body essentially charged with the responsibility for establishing and sustaining a virile, dynamic and result-oriented Unified Local Government Service in the State,” he said.

“The Local Government Service Commission is a statutory body vested with the responsibilities of recruitment, discipline, promotions, transfers, secondments, training and manpower development of Local Government Staff. Other functions of the Commission are discipline, (approvals of) retirements, resignations and withdrawals from the service. These include some staff of the Emirate Councils, District and Village Heads.

“Similarly, the Commission also acts as an impartial arbiter in all matters of petitions, complaints and other related issues for the Local Governments. The Commission is also responsible for handling the appointments of District and Village Heads. With regards to the District Heads, the Commission receives recommendations for their appointments from the Emirate Councils and processes them accordingly. In each submission, it seeks the comments (if any) and endorsement of the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government Affairs on the selection of the District Head. Upon receipt of the comments of the Honourable Commissioner, the Commission deliberates and further recommends to His Excellency, the Governor for approval”
