The Chinese Government has expressed opposition to drawing lines along ideological differences and conducting technological blockades in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated this while responding to questions on the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, which commences in Shanghai, China, on July 17, 2026.

Lin was responding to speculation that China intended to use the conference to seek support from the Global South and gain an advantage in major-country competition in the area of AI, including a report by The Economist claiming that China’s open-source AI is a trap and that embracing China is risky.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, however, said the development of AI bears on the well-being of all humanity.

He also said all parties should work to narrow the digital and smart technology gap, maintain the bottom line of security, improve global governance, and jointly develop AI as an open and inclusive technology for the benefit of all.

“China opposes drawing lines along ideological difference and conducting technological blockade. China stays committed to coordinating both development and security and is ready to share experiences with all to elevate the level of AI innovation worldwide,” Lin said.

Lin further stated that the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance would kick off in Shanghai on Friday.

He added that China would use the occasion to engage in candid exchanges with all parties, build consensus, ensure that developing countries have greater access to the dividends of the intelligence age, and promote technological advancement that leads to the progress and prosperity of human society.
