The leadership of the Igbo Communities Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory has called for an ethnic rebirth aimed at strengthening political and economic influence, saying this can only be achieved when Igbos rally around their own.
The call came on the sidelines of what the association described as ethnic rediscovery and cultural reorientation across various ethnic groups in Nigeria, adding that the Igbo people would not be left behind.
President-General of the ICA, Nze Ellis Ezenekwe, while offering royal blessings to the Labour Party (LP) flag bearer, Hon. Chimaobi Opara, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party and candidate for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency election, said that, having been found worthy, Igbos in the FCT must secure political positions.
He said this would underscore the contributions of Igbos to the development of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) since its inception.
“I believe that we are more indigenous than any ethnic group in the FCT, counting from our developmental contributions. So, Igbos holding political offices in the FCT is just the right thing to be done.”
The President-General, while charging the Labour Party candidate to adopt a holistic campaign approach, regretted the disappointments from past office holders who were largely voted into office by the association in the 2023 elections, but vowed not to support their candidacy again in 2027.
“This may be the last time we vote for those who disappoint in office. This is not the nature of the Igbos, who are hard-working and industrious people. We face challenges and deliver against all odds.”

Hon. Chimaobi Opara, while thanking the association for its overwhelming support for his candidacy, promised a change of narrative and said the Labour Party had developed parameters to measure the performance of its candidates in various positions.
“I thank you for the love and proper coordination of the Igbos in the FCT, and I promise to strengthen it more when elected.
“This will include human capital development and empowerment, which is my major agenda for the constituents.
“I will do this due to the huge economic investments the Igbos have made. Considering their voting strength, high-density population and commitment to the development and existence of the FCT, the Igbos should leverage this enviable strength to endorse the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency mandate and consistently support and elect their own representatives into the National Assembly.
“I promise to visit all 89 units of the ICA across the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency with my campaign council to further promote my candidacy, and I can tell you that no vote from Igbo communities should be wasted or divided through deception. This means that we shall protect and defend our votes.”
