From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on politicians to make their campaigns for the 2027 general elections issue-based and respect opponents with divergent political views.
Diri made the call yesterday at the flag-off of the South-South chapter of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a group campaigning for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, at Oxbow Lake, Yenagoa.
The governor urged members of the movement to emulate what he described as Tinubu’s democratic disposition by being persuasive rather than combative in their political engagements
He said democracy allowed citizens to hold divergent opinions and urged politicians to focus on issues that would advance the country.
Diri expressed optimism that the South-South zone and Nigerians would vote for Tinubu for a second term, saying the President deserved another term to consolidate what he described as the achievements of his administration.
He also urged the movement to adopt an inclusive approach in its campaign across the region.
“I charge the leadership of the PBAT Movement to be inclusive and persuasive in your engagements. Let our campaigns be issue-based.”

Diri said the South-South remained critical to national politics and urged its people to work together towards the movement’s objective.
He commended High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, grand patron of the movement, for mobilising support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The governor also cited the 2023 Bayelsa governorship election and the recent Osun State governorship election as examples of what he described as Tinubu’s democratic credentials.
Diri, who was in the opposition during the 2023 Bayelsa governorship election, congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the recent poll.
Earlier, the South-South Coordinator of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, Pastor Reuben Wilson, said the group was established by Ekpemupolo to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election.
Wilson said the President deserved the support of the region, citing federal appointments and projects as evidence of his administration’s attention to the South-South.
Speaking on behalf of the state coordinators, the Bayelsa coordinator, Daniel Charles, said the region was united behind Tinubu’s re-election bid.
