Zambia is leaving nothing to chance to record her first win over Nigeria since 1985 on Sunday after the country appointed experienced David Kabwe as advisor to coach Wedson Nyirenda.
Power Dynamos coach Kabwe is highly regarded having briefly worked as Zambia assistant coach in 2001.
He led Zanaco to two Zambia league championships, was on attachment at Premier League side Arsenal in 1999 when he worked in Swaziland and he is a CAF instructor.
Kabwe was also touted to handle the Chipolopolo after they were upset by Guinea Bissau in AFCON 2017 qualifiers.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Ponga Liwewe explained the role he will play for interim coach Nyirenda.
“His role is purely to give an assessment and opinion to the coach, but he is not directly to be involved in the training or in the decision making around the team,” Liwewe said.
“That decision lies directly with the coach Mr Wedson Nyirenda.”
Plans to engage former South Africa coach Gordon Igesund as head coach now appear to have been put on hold.
