United States Democratic Party presidential candidate, Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz as her vice-presidential candidate in the November 2024 election.
Walz, 60, is a US Army veteran and former high school teacher.
Harris, the incumbent US Vice President, became the presidential frontrunner following Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race and endorse her on July 21.
Harris’ decision to pick Walz, a military veteran, retired educator and union supporter, marks another major milestone in the short period since the vice president suddenly clinched her party’s ticket.
CNN quoted a source close to Walz as saying that the “chemistry” between the vice president and governor and the governor’s popularity in the US Midwest played major roles in the decision.
“The time they spent together when Walz was campaigning for reelection in 2022, and when they visited the abortion clinic in March this year, apparently made a big impact.
“Then on top of that, the Harris campaign, like all of us, saw how energizing Walz was for the base. They saw how popular he is in Minnesota after passing a historic, progressive agenda here.
“The vetting on Walz went extremely well. So like people are saying, kind of a Goldilocks situation. Every element was just right,” the source said.
