The commencement speaker of the 15th Commencement Ceremony of of the American University, Yola, Prof Mike Ozekhome has described the American University of Nigeria (AUN) as one of the universities in the country designed to make a lasting legacy in in its local, national and international community.
Ozekhome said, universities are critical social pillars of any society and they are instrumental in fostering unity, understanding, national cohesion and progress among diverse members of the Nigerian society.
Mike Ozekhome made the remarks while delivering his speech as the speaker of the 15th Commencement Ceremony of the American University of Nigeria in Yola, Adamawa state.
Delivering his address on a topic he titled, “The Role of University
in Creating a Legacy and Impact on the World,” Ozekhome challenged the graduating students to make their mark wherever they find themselves and to be committed to creating a Legacies would outlive them.
Ozekhome said, “Universities serve as microcosms of the broader society, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences by embracing this diversity within their campuses, universities create environments that nurture mutual respect, understanding, and appreciation for different perspectives and cultures.
“This fosters a sense of belonging and community among students, faculty, and staff, enriching the academic and social experiences of all involved.
“Universities play a pivotal role in tackling societal issues through various avenues including community involvement, policy shaping, and fostering entrepreneurship.
“The role of universities, exemplified by AUN, extends far beyond the classroom walls. Universities have a responsibility to prioritize legacy and impact by committing to excellence, fostering collaboration, embracing diversity, and engaging with local and global communities.
“Universities serve as catalysts for progress, innovation, and positive change in our world.
“Through collective efforts, universities can continue to shape society, inspire future generations, and leave a legacy of lasting impact for generations to come. This is what AUN has stood for.
“Overall, universities’ contributions to academic excellence and innovation are indispensable for addressing global challenges and promoting positive social change.”
He commended AUN as a pacesetter in driving development and making impact in it’s communities with a service-driven education model.
“AUN, through the Atiku Institute for Development (AID) and its partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is creating positive impact within the communities in the North-East Region of Nigeria, providing aid to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS).
“Its Strengthening Education in North-East Nigeria States project (SENSE) focuses on reviving and investing in educational systems in the North-East, especially among the Almajiri children.
“These efforts reflect universities’ commitment to driving positive change and creating a more equitable and sustainable society.
“By engaging with communities and addressing pressing issues, universities such as AUN extend their impact beyond campus boundaries, fostering transformative outcomes,” Ozekhome said.
He extol AUN for the chibok school initiative which offered some of the
abducted girls the opportunity to acquire formal education.
He also commended the AUN’s Waste to Wealth and Rags to Riches programs as initiatives worthy of praise because it has given many locals the opportunity to escape from poverty, earn a living and contribute meaningfully to national development
Speaking at the occasion, the president of the university, DeWayne Frazier, challenged the graduating students to impact their world and be ready to take on the world as the word commencement signifies a new adventure of their lives after school into the world of enterprise.
DeWayne challenged Nigeria as a country not to allow America and there west to despise its diversity saying Nigeria’s strength and prosperity lies in its diversity.
Frazier said, “This service is referred to in the United States usually as a Commencement because it is a culmination of your academic experience, and we are commencing you into the world of your careers, lives and futures.
“This day marks a significant milestone in your lives, and it is a testament to your determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to your education. You have shown us what it means to dream big, to pursue your passions, and to overcome challenges with grace and fortitude.
“Americans and Westerns almost always fail to understand how diverse Nigeria is, and my friends, please do not think it is a weakness, it is the greatest strength in this country. Never let anyone try to divide you all, together, you can do so much more.”
