Hundreds on commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were left stranded on Wednesday as the two-week repair works on the Kara Bridge commenced, triggering heavy gridlock along the axis.
In a Sunday statement, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi announced that the Federal Government repair work on the damaged expansion joints on the ever-busy Kara Bridge.
He said the repair works would commence on Tuesday, September 8.
The project was earlier slated to commence in August 2026 but got suspended for traffic review following public outcry over short notice and the need for effective traffic management.
Despite the review, scores of vehicles could be sighted lined up along the corridor on Wednesday, with the gridlock stretching from the Kara Bridge in Ogun State to the 7Up Junction in Lagos State and beyond.
Many commuters caught in the gridlock took to social media, especially X, to vent their frustration.
Reports indicated that the traffic had extended beyond the Secretariat Bus Stop, while motorists coming from Ikeja and Agege and heading towards the Otedola underpass were also caught in the congestion stretching beyond Otunba Jobi Fele Way as of Tuesday.
Wednesday morning saw many commercial motorists plying one-way traffic routes to convey passengers to their destinations as the gridlock showed no sign of let-up.
Security and traffic management personnel conprising the police, military, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Federal Road Safety Corps and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, could be seen at various spots striving to manage the situation.
