National President of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), John Ogbe has commended President Bola Tinubu for the commencement of payments to former workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways.
Ogbe who has been at the forefront of pushing for former Nigeria Airways workers to get their entitlements told Daily Sun that he can confirm that some have begun to receive their payments and expressed confidence that the process would be completed shortly.
The ATSSSAN boss said one of his campaign promises was to push for ex-staff to get their entitlements and expressed joy that this is being fulfilled. He also expressed gratitude to the minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo for his support.

He said the ex workers of the airline have suffered untold hardship in the past years while waiting for the final settlement. “We want to commend President Tinubu, the Minister who served as a catalyst to speed up this payment process and also the office of the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation. This is a victory for ATSSSAN as most of the Nigeria Airways staff belonged to the union till today. I feel fulfilled because was one of my campaign promises, which is to push for the payment of outstanding entitlement for our members,” he said.
In the same vein, the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) also commended President Tinubu and Keyamo, SAN for addressing the delayed payment. In a statement signed by the body’s president, Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju (rtd), he said while they are appreciative of the government’s responsiveness to the plight of the ex workers, they further request that the entitlements of the remaining living and deceased staff be promptly paid to them and their respective families, to ensure fairness and equal treatment for all senior citizens of Nigeria.
“The Nigeria Airways was the proud national carrier and a symbol of our collective sovereignty. The men and women who worked there were dedicated professionals who served with unwavering zeal, trusting that the nation they contributed to build would care for them in their golden years. The Federal Government is further requested to kindly conclude the process of payment of these senior citizens to end their avoidable sufferings and loss of lives,” he said.
