The management of University of Lagos (UNILAG) has rejected the strike declared by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), assuring students that ongoing examinations will proceed as scheduled.
Following a congress on Tuesday, ASUU UNILAG instructed its members to stop working on Wednesday due to what it called “amputated” salaries for January and February.
Prof. Idou Keinde, the union’s chairman, said that lecturers did not get their full pay, including the Professorial Allowance, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics.
Keinde insisted that until the unpaid salary components were settled, the lecturers would not return to their jobs.
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the Head of UNILAG’s Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the university management noted reports of the industrial action but observed that the declaration did not follow established procedures.

“The Management of the University of Lagos has noted reports circulating in the media that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG Chapter, at its Congress held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, directed its members to suspend their services over alleged unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances,” the statement said.
“Management observes that due process was not followed in making this declaration. Nevertheless, in its commitment to the welfare of staff and students, the university has continued to engage with the ASUU Executive to address all issues.”
The administration also stressed that the current semester exams would go on, pointing out that students are in a crucial phase of the school year.
The statement claims that any disruption could have a negative impact on students, especially those who are getting ready to start internships, the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), and the Nigerian Law School.
Exams for courses that have already been postponed by department heads or deans will be rescheduled, it further stated.
“All examinations will continue as scheduled from Thursday, March 12, 2026, and deans are to ensure that necessary arrangements are put in place for the smooth and successful conduct of the examinations,” the statement added.
