President Bola Tinubu on Monday signed into law a bill to establish the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State.

Speaking during the event, President Tinubu described the establishment of the university as a “significant milestone” in addressing historical grievances and fostering growth in the Niger Delta region.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development,” he said. “The Ogoni people have long been at the forefront of advocating for environmental restoration and sustainable development. By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step to address their grievances and create new opportunities for learning and prosperity.”

The President emphasised that the university would serve as a centre of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with skills to tackle environmental challenges and drive clean energy solutions. “This institution will not only provide knowledge but also stand as a beacon of hope for transformational development across the nation,” he added.

Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for passing the bill and commended the Ogoni delegation for their steadfast advocacy. “Your peaceful approach and unwavering commitment to justice are commendable,” he said. “To all stakeholders—traditional institutions, academic communities, private sector partners, and youth—I urge you to embrace this university as a symbol of unity and progress.”

The establishment of the university comes amid ongoing efforts by Tinubu’s administration to address longstanding issues in Ogoniland.

Just two weeks earlier, during a meeting with Ogoni leaders led by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Tinubu pledged his administration’s dedication to peace, justice, and sustainable development in the region. He called on stakeholders to set aside historical grievances and work collaboratively toward achieving these goals.

“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct some anomalies of the past going forward,” Tinubu said during that meeting. “We must make this trip worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland.”

The President had also directed National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to coordinate consultations with stakeholders to ensure inclusive dialogue and mutual understanding. He tasked federal ministries and agencies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to cooperate with Rivers State authorities in addressing lingering issues.
