President Bola Tinubu, in a heartfelt tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), on his 83rd birthday, has lauded his decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, highlighting his pivotal role in the nation’s democratic evolution and ongoing commitment to peace across Africa.

In a statement he personally signed, President Tinubu declared, “I salute him for his decades of exceptional service to Nigeria, both in uniform and in retirement, and commend his steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and good governance across the African continent.”

The President emphasised Abubakar’s historic leadership during a critical juncture in Nigeria’s political history. “General Abubakar’s legacy, particularly his role in leading Nigeria through a peaceful transition to democratic rule in 1999, remains a watershed moment in the nation’s history,” Tinubu said. “His selfless act of handing over power paved the way for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and strengthened the principle of constitutional democracy.”

Beyond his tenure as Head of State, Tinubu noted that Abubakar continued to influence Nigeria’s political landscape. As Chairman of the National Peace Committee, he played a vital role in fostering dialogue and ensuring credible elections. The President remarked, “His voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship is deeply valued at a time when unity and leadership are more critical than ever.”

Describing Abubakar as “a patriot of uncommon integrity,” he noted that his example inspires generations of Nigerians engaged in public service. “As he marks another year of life, Nigeria honours his sacrifices, wisdom, and unyielding devotion to the peace and unity of our great nation,” Tinubu added.

Concluding his tribute, President Tinubu extended warm wishes for the former Head of State’s health and well-being: “I wish the former Head of State continued strength, good health, and divine grace in the years ahead.”
