President Bola Tinubu has described the death of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry and democratic development.

Oladipo, 56, a former Political Editor of The Punch newspaper, died suddenly, prompting tributes from colleagues and stakeholders across the media industry.

In a condolence message issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said Oladipo’s professional career exemplified the important role of journalism in strengthening democracy.

The President said the late journalist contributed significantly to political reporting and the evolution of digital journalism, particularly through The Eagle Online, which he established after years of service at The Punch.

Tinubu said Oladipo’s work went beyond news reporting, noting that journalists play a critical role in keeping citizens informed, holding public officials accountable and providing platforms for robust public discourse.

“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy,” the President said.

He described Oladipo as a journalist who remained passionate about his profession throughout his career, adding that his contributions to political journalism and the digital media space would not be forgotten.

The President commended the deceased’s commitment to providing credible information to Nigerians through both traditional and digital media platforms.

Tinubu extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and his friends, praying that God would grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

“His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will not be forgotten. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues in GOCOP and friends. I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
