The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has advised Nigerians to prioritise their health and overall wellbeing as the holiday season begins.

NACA reminded Nigerians of the need to exercise caution in their activities during this period, particularly those that could lead to sexual encounters.

The Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, in a statement by Toyin Aderibigbe, Head of Public Relations and Protocol, emphasised that while Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, it also presents an opportunity to make informed and responsible decisions about one’s health.

Dr. Ilori stated that knowing one’s HIV status is a crucial step toward protecting one’s health and the wellbeing of others. She urged Nigerians to take advantage of free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide, highlighting that while HIV remains a significant public health concern, advancements in testing and treatment mean it is no longer a death sentence.

“Early diagnosis ensures access to lifesaving medication and leads to a healthier, longer life. We understand that the festive season comes with increased social activities. While celebrating, let us remember the importance of safe practices. Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, continue to uphold it as the safest option,” Dr. Ilori said.

The NACA boss noted that ignorance is no longer an excuse, as HIV testing and education are now widely accessible, equipping individuals with the knowledge to make informed decisions.

She reiterated NACA’s commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria.

“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing centre to know your HIV status. Let us work together to create a healthier, happier Nigeria,” she said.
