Four persons are still missing after a boat capsized on Saturday after the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The both capsized at Ureju community while conveying locals and security operatives from ward 03 (Ebrohimi) to the council headquarters in Koko town.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeyinka Adeleke, who confirmed the development in Asaba, said 18 passengers had so far been rescued while four were still missing.
Those rescued including the three police officers on board the ill-fated boat and 15 locals, according to Mr. Adeleke, who added that two of the victims had been rushed to the hospital.
Adeleke also confirmed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were not involved in the boat mishap, and called for calm, adding that a search for the missing passengers was still in progress.
Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in charge of Delta State, Dr. Cyril Omorogbe, had on Sunday morning confirmed the boat mishap, noting that election officials were not involved and electoral materials were not affected.
“I understand that my staff members are not involved, they were all safe and the ad-hoc staff were safe. The actual details have got to me right now. And I don’t think the mishap affected the materials because it happened later in the day, from what I know,” he said.
