A former member of the Delta State House of Assembly, Ojere Edeyibo, has emerged candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 26, 2017, bye-election for the Warri South Constituency I seat of the Delta State House of Assembly.
The bye-election is occasioned by the vacancy created by the death of Mrs. Omawumi Udoh, who represented the constituency till late last year when she died.
Edeyibo, who polled 17 votes to beat closest rival, Tunde Fregene (10 votes) in the primaries where delegates from the six wards of the constituency participated, was a pioneer member of the House in 1991 when the state was created out of the old Bendel State.
The primary election, it was gathered, was conducted by members of the party loyal to the national chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
Members of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi caretaker committee are in majority in the state abstained from the primary election that was held in Warri.
Edeyibo in his post-victory speech, assured his constituents of fair and equal representation if voted in during the bye-election.
“I will surely give them what they deserve and I will ensure it gets to them equitably. But first of all I give God the glory for the victory and also for PDP, our great party and I want to urge them to come together and work for a common goal of the party for the future,” he said.
State chairman of the Sheriff faction and former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Austin Ogbaburhon described Edeyibo’s victory as a welcome development for the party, adding that his emergence was a testimony of commitment and absolute loyalty to the party.
Ogbaburhon therefore called on PDP faithful in the constituency to come out en-mass and support the party’s flag bearer and propel to victory in the bye-election.
He advised the followers to put the party first, warning that anyone found working contrary to the interest of the party would be dealt with in accordance with the party constitution.
