Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The high-level summit is expected to focus on strategies for conflict prevention and resolution, as well as efforts to promote lasting peace and stability across the African continent.
Shettima, who is accompanied by senior defence and security officials, will join other African leaders and key stakeholders at the meeting to deliberate on regional security challenges and ways of strengthening continental mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts.
The Vice President is expected to deliver President Tinubu’s address at the summit, presenting Nigeria’s position on the issues before the gathering.
Nigeria, which has played a significant role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts in Africa, is expected to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening continental cooperation on peace and security.
The summit comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of the continent, with African leaders continuing to seek coordinated approaches to conflict prevention, dispute resolution and the consolidation of peace.
Shettima’s participation is also expected to reinforce Nigeria’s position on the need for stronger collective action by African countries in addressing threats to peace and stability.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in Angola.
