Sahara Power Enterprise Group (SPEG) has commenced construction of a $12 million, 12MW gas-fired Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ogba, Lagos, in a move aimed at improving electricity supply to businesses, industries and communities across the area.
The project, being developed at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027 and will serve customers in Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road and surrounding areas.
The plant will comprise six 2MW gas-fired generating units and is expected to provide a more reliable and cost-effective source of electricity to industrial clusters, businesses, residential communities and public institutions within the designated areas.
Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director, SPEG, said the investment was designed to provide a practical response to Nigeria’s electricity challenges and support economic activity.
“This initiative is about much more than breaking ground for a new power plant. It represents a bold commitment to Nigeria’s energy future and our determination to deliver dependable, efficient, and sustainable electricity to businesses and communities,” he said.
Adesina said improved electricity availability and reliability would enhance productivity, growth and value creation, adding that the plant would deploy modern gas-powered generating technology in line with established environmental, operational and safety standards.
Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ikeja Electric Plc, described the project as a strategic investment that would improve the quality, reliability and sustainability of electricity supply to customers.
“At Ikeja Electric, our priority is to partner with forward-looking investors and developers such as SPEG to deliver innovative solutions that improve customer experience and reliable electricity supply across our network,” she said.
She said the investment demonstrated the importance of collaboration between electricity distribution companies and private investors in developing sustainable energy solutions.
Construction of the plant is being undertaken by Cummins West Africa Limited.

The project also received the support of the Agege Local Government and the traditional institution in Ogba, with Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, Executive Chairman, Agege Local Government, saying improved electricity supply would help create an enabling environment for businesses, attract investment and generate employment.
The traditional ruler of Ogbaland, HRM Oba Egbeyemi Latif Oladimeji, also pledged the support of the palace and residents for the project.
The Ogba IPP is part of SPEG’s broader efforts to deploy solutions across Nigeria’s electricity value chain, strengthen power infrastructure and contribute to closing the country’s electricity supply gap.
