Members of the opposition political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and All Nigerians Redemption Party (ANRP) in Ondo State, yesterday, protested the outcome of last Saturday’s House of Assembly election.
Numbering over 500, the protesters, led by a former special adviser to the governor on Political Matters, Segun Adegoke, demanded cancellation of the election in Ondo West 1, Ondo West 11 and Ondo East constituencies.
The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions, alleged that the election was marred by irregularities, and blamed officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what they described as poor performance during the election. The opposition members, who marched on major streets of Akure, the state capital, also visited the INEC state secretariat.
Speaking with newsmen, Adegoke called for the cancellation of the results in the three constituencies, failure of which, he said, they would seek redress at the election petition tribunal and pursue the case up to the Supreme Court.
“The March 9 election in Ondo State witnessed the exhibition of large scale violence and disturbances in different parts of its communities,” he said.
Adegoke alleged that the plan to rig the election was hatched on March 3 at the residence of a prominent politician in the area.
