Ogun: APC wins councillorship by-election in Yewa South LG

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has declared Mrs Adebunmi Adekanbi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the councillorship by-election.

The exercise was conducted on Saturday, in Ward 1, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Announcing the results, the Electoral Officer for the Council Area, Ademola Akinyele, confirmed that Mrs Adekanbi polled 1,873 votes to defeat her closest rival from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 351 votes. She was accordingly returned elected.

The by-election which was held across the 36 polling units, followed the death of the former Ward Councillor, Olayinka Adekanbi.

The poll was contested by candidates from 10 political parties, including the APC, PDP, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, Action Alliance, among others.

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, who cast his vote at Polling Unit 009, U.A.M.C Primary School 1, Eleja Pahayi, commended the peaceful atmosphere of the election.

He lauded the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration for ensuring a transparent and credible exercise, while also extending condolences to the late Adekanbi’s family.

The State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Olabimtan, who voted at his polling unit at the State Hospital, GRA, Ilaro, praised OGSIEC for what he described as a flawless electoral process.

In her acceptance speech, the Councillor-elect expressed gratitude to the people of Yewa South, the APC leadership, and Governor Abiodun for their support and loyalty.

She pledged to uphold the good name of her late husband and to serve the ward with dedication.

Speaking on behalf of the OGSIEC Chairman, Mr Babatunde Osibodu, the Commissioner for Legal Affairs, Mrs Remilekun Olaopa, thanked the electorate for their peaceful conduct and discipline at the polling units. She described the by-election as a model of transparency and credibility.
