Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, says his team will deploy an independent system to receive and transmit results from every polling unit to its own situation room during the 2027 presidential election.
Obi disclosed the plan in an exclusive interview with ARISE News, saying the arrangement would allow his team to independently monitor the votes recorded at polling units and compare them with results transmitted through the official electoral process.
The former Anambra State governor said the system would operate alongside the transmission of results to the designated INEC platform, giving his team its own record of what happened at each polling unit.
“We must make sure that every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly. And we will have even a dual transmission, so that as it’s going to the proper designated INEC portal, it’s also being transmitted where the people can see it,” Obi said.
He said the objective was to ensure that the results received at his team’s situation room correspond with those recorded at the polling units, reducing the possibility of discrepancies emerging during the collation process.
“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our situation room the correct results,” he said.
Obi said other organisations were also likely to deploy similar monitoring arrangements, which he believes would make it more difficult for results that did not originate from polling units to be presented as genuine results.
“And I’m sure there’s so many other agencies that intend to do the same thing. So we’re not going to have a situation where somebody just pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit,” he said.
The NDC candidate said his approach was aimed at ensuring that the figures emerging from the election could be independently checked against what was recorded at the point of voting.
His proposal comes as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with the credibility of results transmission and collation remaining a major issue in Nigeria’s electoral process. INEC’s existing system requires polling-unit results to be recorded and transmitted through its designated channels.
“I want us to make sure that the right things are done. There’s nothing difficult in having a simple, free, transparent election. It happens in Ghana, it happens everywhere,” Obi said.
