…as ASUSS hails Adeleye for sponsoring Bill

The Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has signed into law a bill elevating the office of the Principal-General to the status of a Permanent Secretary in the state’s education system.

The bill which was sponsored by the Minority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Lukman Adeleye and was recently passed by the Assembly, sought the gazetting of the Principal-General’s Office.

With the bill signed into law by the governor, whenever a Principal General retires, a replacement must be appointed without delay, securing the continuity of leadership and honour for secondary school teachers.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), in a letter signed by the State Chairman, Mr. Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa, expressed gratitude to Adeleye for his vision and courage in initiating the legislative process.

Agbesanwa in the letter notes that “the bill represents a restoration of the dignity of teachers and a major win for the teaching profession in Ogun State”.

He noted that Bill will not only boost the morale of teachers in the state, but also strengthen the secondary education system.

“We thank Honourable Lukman Adeleye for standing boldly for truth, equity, and justice by sponsoring this bill. His effort has brought lasting honour to teachers in the state, ensuring that our Principal Generals now enjoy the recognition they truly deserve,” Agbesanwa added.

The ASUSS Chairman also commended the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Daisi Elemide, other lawmakers and the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, for their roles in ensuring the Bill’s success, while extending appreciation to the governor for assenting to it.

He described the new law as a gift to teachers ahead of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, adding “It comes on the heels of other interventions by Governor Abiodun, including the provision of new vehicles for Principal-Generals in 2023”.
