Lawyer and human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has mocked those he called ’emergency activists’ joining the #OccupyNASS protest against the recently amended Electoral Act.

Since Monday, many opposition leaders have joined civil society groups and other Nigerians converging at the National Assembly gate to protest against the Senate’s decision not to explicitly mandate real-time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act.

Some opposition leaders that have joined the protests include 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Adeyanju said he would not be surprised if former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and embattled former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN also joined the protest.

He alleged that some individuals now joining the protest, whom he called emergency activists, used to mobilise thugs against and mock protesters.

Adeyanju said, “All the people that mobilised thugs to attack us and mocked us for protesting for years are now protesting. We welcome them to the other side. Hoping Comrade Malami and ElRufai join soon.”

The lawyer added, “All those who once mobilised thugs against us, mocked our protests, and ridiculed us for our insistence on accountability and the rule of law are today finding their voices on the streets.

“These are the same individuals who, while in government under previous regimes, opposed every genuine effort to defend the rights of the people and to demand that the right thing be done.

“Today, they are confronted by the very same rotten system they helped to build and protect, and can no longer escape its consequences.

“We welcome them, nonetheless, to this side of history. Their sudden awakening is proof that injustice eventually spares no one. As more emergency comrades begin to feel the weight of a broken system now turned against them, I look forward to seeing many more familiar faces join the call for electoral reform.”
