Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on women accountants to take the lead in curbing the culture of waste and reckless spending in Nigeria.

Speaking at the investiture of Mrs. Blessing Ngozi Osakwe as the 12th President of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), in Lagos, Obi urged the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and its affiliates to intervene in halting misappropriation and mismanagement of the nation’s scarce resources.

He believed that financial recklessness by public officials was worsening poverty and unemployment, warning that borrowing without accountability is mortgaging the future of Nigerian children.

Sharing from his experiences in banking and governance, Obi commended female professionals for their integrity and firmness, citing examples of women who served under him as accountant-generals and commissioner for finance in Anambra State.

He urged women accountants nationwide to emulate such examples and insist on due process.

“Your members must stand up to political leaders and ensure this recklessness stops,” he added.
