Nigeria’s sole participant at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Samuel Ikpefan, may not have won a medal but his performance was still a massive achievement. The French born athlete is the first person to have represented Nigeria in an Olympic men’s cross country skiing competition and he was delighted with his time of 3:09.57 which saw him ranked 73 out of 88 participants in the Men’s Sprint Free Cross-country Skiing event.
To put this achievement into context we spoke to a sports expert from JustGamblers who said;
“Ikpefan was never going to compete with the top performers in the sport, like eventual gold medal winner Johannes Klaebo from Norway. You only need to look at Klaebo’s winning time in the final of 2:58.06 to see that. But, competing at all in this standard of competition is a huge deal and could provide the impetus for other Nigerian youngsters to perform on the global sporting stage.”
There is no doubt that Ikpefan has attracted a great deal of admiration for his Olympic performance especially considering the difficult journey he had to get there.
Ikpefan’s rise to Olympic fame
Samuel Ikpefan first became interested in skiing as a youngster growing up in the town of Annemasse in the French Alps. He was six years old when he first dreamed of stardom in the sport.
Of course, being French born, he originally had ambitions to join the French ski team. However, he was not good enough to secure a place and decided to take a break from skiing in 2016.
Fast forward to 2018 and Ikpefan had obtained a Nigerian passport through his father. This meant that he now had dual nationality and could therefore choose to represent Nigeria. At this point, Ikpefan decided to make an attempt to ski for his father’s homeland.
He contacted the Nigeria Skiing Federation to request an opportunity and was invited to Abuja to participate in a roller skiing demonstration. This event was organized by the Nigeria Skiing Federation’s Vice President and gave him the opportunity to take a closer look at the ambitious skier from France.
Ikpefan was delighted to have the opportunity to impress and made his way to Abuja straight away. From this first chance to shine he went on to secure himself the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the Olympics and realize his ambition to perform on the world stage.
An Olympics to remember for Nigeria
Despite the fact that Ikpefan did not qualify to appear in later rounds of the Men’s Sprint Free Cross-country Skiing event, 2022 was still a memorable Winter Olympics year for Nigeria.
The country had every reason to be proud of its skier who impressed with his tenacity. Ikpefan is also hopeful that his performance will persuade Nigerian youngsters they can succeed in traditional winter sports like skiing.
Who knows, Nigeria might discover more talented individuals who can join Ikpefan at the next Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, in 2026.
